Kimber House
South East London, UK
Kimber House is a 1960s semi-detached home reworked to better support contemporary family life. The brief centred on reordering the ground floor, extending to the rear, and transforming the original layout — including the conversion of an integrated garage — into a series of connected, light-filled spaces.
The new plan introduces flexibility, allowing the house to shift between openness and moments of separation. A living room sits to the front of the house, shaped around bespoke joinery that provides storage, seating, and a quiet window nook for reading, play, and rest. A crafted timber screen slides to divide or connect spaces as needed, supporting different modes of living.
At the heart of the home, the kitchen is organised around a generous island, conceived as a shared, everyday space. Natural materials — hand-thrown brickwork, exposed timber, polished concrete, zinc — define the house’s character, bringing warmth, texture, and light throughout. Large sliding doors open the kitchen to the garden beyond, completing a calm and functional home.
